Pilot Counseling

Captain Kahn has been actively involved in the aviation industry for 50+ years. A pioneer in her field, she was one of the first female pilots hired by a major US airline. Prior to starting her airline career in 1977, she instructed at the Sierra Academy in Northern California and operated her own weekend ground school teaching Private, Commercial and Instrument courses.

She holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, including type ratings on the Boeing 757/767, McDonnell-Douglas MD-80. She was the first woman to be type-rated in a Lockheed JetStar. Her other ratings include: CFII MEI, Flight Engineer, Turbojet, Seaplane, Helicopter (IFR), and has qualified seven times for the Master CFI (now Emeritus) designation.

As an author, speaker and career counselor, Captain Kahn also specializes in helping pilots improve their career preparation. More recently she has expanded her business to provide career development beyond aviation. “The first step in counseling with me”, Captain Kahn states, “is to read my book; it covers important information and will insure that you get the most from our counseling session.”

“Captain Karen M Kahn, a 6-time Master and SAFE member, recently renewed her Master CFI accreditation. Captain Karen Kahn   is a retired major commercial airline Boeing 757/767 pilot, aviation author, career counselor, and independent CFI at Santa Barbara Airport (SBA). She is also active in the Ninety-Nines (the international organization of women pilots created by Amelia Earhart in 1929) and serves as a FAASTeam representative in the FAA's Van Nuys FSDO area.

Karen's accreditation as a Master CFI (Certificated Flight Instructor) was renewed by Master Instructors LLC, the international accrediting authority for the Master Instructor designation as well as the FAA-approved Master Instructor Program. She first earned this national professional accreditation in 2003, has held it continuously since then.

To help put these achievements in their proper perspective, there are approximately 97,000 CFIs in the United States. Fewer than 800 aviation educators worldwide have achieved one or more of the Master accreditations thus far. Captain Kahn is one of only 53 California aviation educators to earn this prestigious "Master" title. Read more about this powerful, empowering woman...

 Airline Interview

 Single Issue

Our Basic, Advanced or Senior counseling service begins with a detailed questionnaire describing your personal, professional, educational and financial background. Once we receive your paperwork, we will call you to schedule telephone or in-person counseling session at our offices in Santa Barbara, California. (Evening and weekend appointments are available and SB Airport pickup available, upon request.)

Our Airline Interview counseling is a 3½ to 4-hour session, which includes a videotaped mock interview designed to replicate your actual airline’s interview. Working with an employed Airline Captain, we will analyze your strengths and probe your weak areas to help you answer the tough interview questions, while avoiding canned responses. We recommend lodging your paperwork with our office at least one (1) week prior to your counseling appointment and at least two (2) weeks before your airline interview.

Our Single Issue counseling session enables you to share a single, crucial career concern with an experienced professional pilot who can advise you toward the right choice and help you avoid expensive mistakes.

Due to its immediate nature, the counseling session is conducted by phone after we receive your written information, detailing your special need or concern.
